Tater Tots

Tater Tots History:
Here's a brief history of tater tots
  • In 1953, brothers F. Nephi Grigg and Golden Grigg, who owned Ore-Ida, a frozen food company, created tater tots as a way to use leftover potato scraps from making french fries.
  • The brothers initially used the leftover potatoes as cattle feed, but the starch in the potatoes made the cattle too large.
  • The brothers then decided to press the potato scraps into small cylinders or logs, coat them in oil, and sell them as tater tots.
  • Tater tots were officially released in stores in 1956, but they were not popular at first because they were so cheap.
  • When Ore-Ida raised the price of tater tots, the perceived value of the product rose, and they became popular.
  • Today, tater tots are enjoyed by both kids and adults and are used in many creative recipes in upscale restaurants.
